Homemade Southern Biscuits: A Taste of Tradition
Nothing beats a homemade biscuit, especially when baked in a seasoned black iron skillet. Growing up, my mom always made homemade biscuits, and they were a staple in our household. Living in Ohio, I’ve noticed there aren’t as many biscuit flours to choose from compared to Kentucky, where you have plenty of options. It seems fewer people in Ohio make homemade biscuits, and I believe it's a dying art. I want to show you just how easy it is to make these delicious biscuits and why it’s worth the effort.
The recipe I use is from the back of the Southern Biscuit Company Formula L Complete Biscuit Mix bag. When making biscuits for more than just my husband and myself, I follow the full recipe. For just the two of us, I half it. I also usually add a bit more buttermilk than the recipe calls for. The more you practice, the better you become at getting the right consistency of dough. But don’t worry, you can’t really mess them up! It’s better for the dough to be a little too thin than too thick.
Ingredients:
3 1/4 cups Southern Biscuit Company Formula L Complete Biscuit Mix
1 1/4 cups buttermilk
Extra self-rising flour (for dusting)
White Crisco shortening (for greasing the skillet)
Instructions:
Preheat your oven to 450°F and grease your black iron skillet well with Crisco shortening. If you don’t have an iron skillet, a round cake pan works too.
Mix the dough according to the recipe on the bag.
3. Prepare your work surface by sifting some self-rising flour onto it. I like to put out folded paper towels on my countertop for easier cleanup.
4. Turn the dough out onto the floured surface and sift a bit more flour on top to cover it.
5. Fold the dough a couple of times, just enough to bring it together. Overworking the dough can make your biscuits tough.
6. Pat the dough out to form a circle about 1/2 inch to 1 inch thick, depending on your preference.
7. Cut out the biscuits using a metal biscuit cutter. If the dough sticks to the cutter, dip the cutter in flour to help.
8. Place the biscuits in the prepared skillet or pan. It’s okay if they touch; I prefer them that way. Dab a little buttermilk on the tops to help them turn golden brown and stay soft.
9. Bake for 10-12 minutes but keep an eye on them as oven times can vary. You want them to be golden brown.
10. Turn the biscuits out of the pan as soon as they come out of the oven.
These biscuits turn out so fluffy on the inside and just right on the outside. They are delicious and perfect for any meal. I hope you enjoy this recipe as much as we do!
